About

Description: 

ISHALL is an accelerated, intensive two-year course in literature and language designed to meet the curricular goals and merit standards of high school English, grades 7-10, in two years.

Teachers

Faculty in Michigan State University's Department of English teaches ISHALL. Support personnel include graduate students and undergraduate interns.

ISHALL Format

ISHALL classes meet from 8-10:30am on Wednesdays at Michigan State University. Voluntary workshop and consulting sessions are held Tuesday and Sunday afternoons on campus.

Evaluation

Student work is evaluated according to the same criteria as set forth by the Michigan High School Content Expectations Writing and speaking assignments will have specific prompts and rubrics for performance.

Post-ISHALL Learning

After successfully completing ISHALL, students will have the option of completing an AP language course at MSU, taking AP literature course at their high school, and then enrolling in college courses through dual enrollment.

Advantages

ISHALL students will benefit from small classes, individual attention, and enrichment experiences, including publishing a small magazine, attending theatrical performances, and hearing guest speakers.

Eligibility

Eligibility: 

ISHALL is designed for students in 7th, 8th and 9th grades who have achieved 520 - Critical Reading on the SAT, or 21 - English, no lower than 22 - Critical Reading on the ACT AND who, in addition, score well on qualifying diagnostic essay that gauges their readiness to undertake the challenging work of the course.

Student Responsibilities

1. Attend ISHALL classes regularly.
2. Complete assigned homework regularly.
3. Keep parent/s informed of weekly graded homework and quizzes.
4. Attend ISHALL Labs as desired or assigned.
5. Exhibit appropriate classroom behavior.
6. Maintain satisfactory level of performance in regular school course work.


Parent Responsibilities

1. Transport student to and from class once a week.
2. Attend an initial information session, fall orientation session, and conferences.
3. Support and encourage the student.
4. Review weekly graded homework and quizzes with the student.
5. Communicate with the ISHALL professor and local or ISD ISHALL Consortium representative if there is a problem.
6. Provide student with an access to a computer with word processing capabilities.

Local District Responsibilities

1. Release students to attend class at Michigan State University during their school day.
2. Agree that these classes will be accepted in lieu of in-school required English classes.
3. Recognize this course of study and record credits and grades on high school transcripts.
4. Grant high school credit for demonstrated mastery of content (up to four years of high school English).
5. Identify a local district contact person for ISHALL.

Cost

Cost / Fee: 

The full cost of ISHALL instruction per student per year is approximately $1,000. Upon acceptance into ISHALL each student pays an initial $40 reservation or continuation fee confirming his/her intent to participate. The parents and/or the local school district pay tuition in the amount of $500 per student during the fall semester.

NOTE: Students outside of the surrounding four county area are responsible for the full $1,000 tuition.
