Summer Programs 2020 - Live Online
Live Online Programming with MSU GATE
In support of Michigan State University’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on the campus and greater community, the decision was made not to hold in-person on-campus youth and pre-college programs this summer.
In effort to support gifted children in Michigan and beyond, MSU GATE has developed GATE SUMMER ONLINE 2020, an interactive LIVE Zoom video based class platform for gifted students in grades 3-11. The online courses will be LIVE with the same instructors that were originally scheduled to teach in the on campus summer program. The overall program structure has continued within each area of interest: GUPPY, MST, MSTL and IS4GT. However, in an effort to create quality online programming, some of the tracks and classes may have changed and the time structure has been somewhat shortened in an effort to limit the student’s screen time, but still allow for strong interaction during the course.
GUPPY is designed for young gifted and talented students in grades 3-6 to attend LIVE online classes taught by MSU faculty and subject experts through Michigan State University. This GATE program will offer young gifted students a variety of accelerated exploratory educational presentations and fun interactive experiences through LIVE online classes. Students choose a week and a track and will log into a password protected Zoom platform from 8:55a.m.-12p.m. during the chosen week. ALL classes will be hosted by GATE staff and instructors.
Meets 5 days Monday-Friday for 45 minutes or one-hour per class each day with various instructors and disciplines depending on the week. Classes will meet in session segments beginning in the morning and ending by early afternoon. All tracks will be expected to be online 8:55am - 12:30pm with breaks throughout (exception of track F, may need to be online until 1:00pm).

MST ONLINE (Math, Science, Technology)
The program will be hosted LIVE online and offer a variety of topics within mathematics, science, and technology, focusing on real-world applications in these areas. The goal is to match the intellectual abilities of talented students with rigorous and challenging course work, which provides enrichment but does not duplicate or accelerate course work that is part of the regular school curriculum. Students will participate in two classes and one workshop. Students interested in MST ONLINE will apply and choose a set track for the designated week listed below.
Will meet for one of two available weeks for 1.5 hours per class each day. Classes will be held in 1.5 hour segments in the morning, afternoon and late afternoon. MST session dates are July 13-17, 2020. Classes will be 8:55am - 2:30pm with breaks throughout.
MSTL ONLINE (Math, Science, Technology, and Leadership)
The MSTL program offers advanced curriculum, as well as a leadership workshop. Students will take two classes that have been designed to stimulate students to learn about new developments in mathematics, science, and technology, and to explore related career fields. Students will also take one leadership workshop which will introduce them to concepts and skills required to be a leader in their fields. Students interested in MST ONLINE will apply and will attend the set track for the designated week listed.
Will meet for 4.5 hours per day for two full weeks with the same curriculum. Classes will be held in 1.5 hour segments in the morning, afternoon and late afternoon. MSTL session dates are July 13-24, 2020. Classes will be 8:55am - 3:30pm with breaks throughout.
