Engineering Explorations: Discovering the World of Engineering
Welcome to Engineering Explorations, a dynamic and hands-on class designed for gifted 5th-grade students eager to explore the exciting world of engineering! In this course, students will dive into the diverse fields of engineering, from mechanical and electrical to civil and environmental engineering. Through interactive activities, projects, and real-world challenges, students will gain a deeper understanding of how engineers design, build, and improve the world around us. Whether they’re creating bridges, designing robots, or solving environmental problems, students will experience firsthand how engineering makes a difference in our daily lives.
Monday - Introduction to Engineering: Students will be introduced to the different branches of engineering, including civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. They will learn about the role engineers play in solving real-world problems.
Tuesday - The Engineering Design Process: Students will learn the key steps engineers take when solving problems, from identifying a problem to brainstorming, creating prototypes, testing, and refining designs. They will apply this process in their projects.
Wednesday - Problem-Solving and Innovation: Students will develop critical thinking and creativity as they work through engineering challenges. They will learn to approach problems from multiple perspectives and find innovative solutions.
Thursday - Team Collaboration: Engineering is often a team effort. Students will work in small groups, collaborating and communicating with others to share ideas, solve problems, and complete engineering projects.
Friday - Understanding Real-World Applications: Students will explore how different types of engineering impact the world, from designing sustainable cities and green energy solutions to developing solutions to real life problems.
Art Explorations: Understanding the Elements of Art
In Art Explorations, students will embark on a creative journey to discover and master the elements of art—line, shape, form, space, texture, value, and color—through the use of various art tools and mediums. This hands-on class will encourage students to experiment with different techniques, express their unique perspectives, and deepen their understanding of how art communicates emotions, tells stories, and reflects the world around us. Whether it's painting, sculpture, printmaking, or digital art, students will explore how to use each element to create powerful, meaningful artwork.
Key Learning Objectives:
-
Mastering the Elements of Art: Students will explore the seven elements of art in depth—line, shape, form, space, texture, value, and color—and learn how these fundamental components work together to create powerful visual compositions.
-
Exploring Different Mediums: Students will experiment with a wide range of art mediums, including pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic paints, clay, pastels, and digital tools, gaining experience with how different materials affect the way art is created and perceived.
-
Art Tools and Techniques: Students will learn how to use different art tools such as brushes, pencils, sculpting tools, sponges, and digital design software. They will discover techniques like shading, blending, layering, and mixing colors, allowing them to bring their artistic visions to life.
-
Creative Expression: The course will emphasize self-expression, allowing students to explore their creativity through personal projects, guided exercises, and open-ended assignments. They will learn how art can communicate ideas, tell stories, and express emotions.
-
Art Critique and Reflection: Students will engage in thoughtful discussions about their artwork and the work of their peers, developing critical thinking and constructive feedback skills. They will also reflect on their artistic growth throughout the class.
Cyphers and Codes
Knowledge is power, and power must be kept safe. Throughout history, secrets have been hidden not simply within a locked box, but disguised through cryptography. From letters written to a noble’s secret amour to a general’s messages in war time, we’ll explore some of the techniques used to encode information and decrypt these puzzling messages.
