Track G-1 Descriptions

Physio Explorer - Anatomy & Physiology of the Human Body

Have you ever wondered how the human body really works? If so, then you are already thinking like a physiologist. Physiology is the branch of biological sciences dealing with the functioning of organisms. At the basic level, physiology helps us
understand how living creatures do all of the things they do: run, jump, breathe, think, feel, and keep their hearts beating. The class will be a “hands-on” and “minds-on” experience, where you will learn whole-body integrative physiology. You will use the same lab as the college physiology students and use computers to collect and analyze data. You will also have the chance to closely examine real organs, monitor vital signs, perform an ECG, and test your lung function.

We will start the week by looking at the body as a whole unit, creating a “Body Map” and orienting to the different systems we will look at the rest of the week. From there we will use computers with adult assistance to collect physiological data, graph or draw it, and add it to our maps. By the end of the course, we will have a completed map of the human body to use for future physiology adventures!

Plan, Prep, Shoot, Edit and Print!

Do you love to take pictures? Have you ever looked at product photography shots in commercials and online and thought, I wish I could do that? This class will turn that dream into a reality. Do you enjoy telling stories with pictures or photos? Learn to develop and analyze backgrounds, color, lighting, and landscapes to create amazing scenes for your photos.  Students will learn to be savvy and how to develop and create works of art out of photography. Students will produce various forms of photographs to learn to tell a story, capture experience and share opinions.

It is important for every person to have practical knowledge to provide value and grow. The class will help students understand how people go from content consumption to creation using artistic concepts. This program will go through the ins and outs of media creation starting with the basics and working up to a professional level. This specific class will have settings and industry standards talked about in length.

Monday: Pre-production and planning

Tuesday-Thursday: Practice and capture planned content

Friday: Editing content and share with group

Mathematical Mysteries: Quick and Clever Problem Solving

The puzzles in most books have answers, but there are some famous mathematical puzzles to which no one knows the answer yet! Maybe you will solve a famous unsolved puzzle someday. One such puzzle is known as Goldbach’s Conjecture. The conjecture is as follows: All even numbers greater than 2 can be written as the sum of two prime numbers. (Remember, a prime number is one that can be divided by 1 and itself.) No one has proved that this is always true or disproved it by finding an example that doesn’t always work (a counterexample). In this class we will see examples that illustrate Goldbach’s Conjecture and other unsolved math mysteries.

Monday: Cross number puzzle-these puzzles are special; you have to read a story for clues to solve it, so pay attention!

Tuesday: Cross sums- you must figure out what combination of numbers to use so that each column or row adds up to the totals shown on the puzzle.

Wednesday: Hidden message- shade each of your answers on a number grid to discover hidden messages!

Thursday: Multiplication boxes-this puzzle has six multiplication problems, but each row and column in the grid are separate problems!

Friday: Steppingstones-your goal will be to cross a “river” on steppingstones. Each time you need to take a step, roll two dice, and add the numbers. You’ll then use divisibility rules to find a steppingstone that has a number divisible by your dice roll.
